Population synthesis for double white dwarfs II. Semi-detached systems: AM CVn stars

چکیده

We study two models for AM CVn stars: white dwarfs accreting (i) from a helium white dwarf companion and (ii) from a helium-star donor. We show that in the first model possibly no accretion disk forms at the onset of mass transfer. The stability and the rate of mass transfer then depend on the tidal coupling between the accretor and the orbital motion. In the second model the formation of AM CVn stars may be prevented by detonation of the CO white dwarf accretor and the disruption of the system. With the most favourable conditions for the formation of AM CVn stars we find a current Galactic birth rate of 6.8× 10 yr. Unfavourable conditions give 1.1× 10 yr. The expected total number of the systems in the Galaxy is 9.4× 10 and 1.6× 10, respectively. We model very simple selection effects to get some idea about the currently expected observable population and discuss the (quite good) agreement with the observed systems.

Mass Transfer between Double White Dwarfs

Three periodically variable stars have recently been discovered (V407 Vul, P = 9.5 min; ES Cet, P = 10.3 min; RX J0806.3+1527, P = 5.3 min) with properties that suggest that their photometric periods are also their orbital periods, making them the most compact binary stars known. If true, this might indicate that close, detached, double white dwarfs are able to survive the onset of mass transfe...

The population of AM CVn stars from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey

The AM Canum Venaticorum stars are rare interacting white dwarf binaries, whose formation and evolution are still poorly known. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey provides, for the first time, a sample of 6 AM CVn stars (out of a total population of 18) that is sufficiently homogeneous that we can start to study the population in some detail. We use the Sloan sample to ‘calibrate’ theoretical populat...

Short-period AM CVn systems as optical, X-ray and gravitational wave sources

We model the population of AM CVn systems in the Galaxy and discuss the detectability of these systems with optical, X-ray and gravitational wave detectors. We concentrate on the short period (P < 1500 s) systems, some of which are expected to be in a phase of direct impact accretion. Using a self-consistent model for the star formation history and radial distribution of stars in the Galaxy plu...

Population synthesis for double white dwarfs I. Close detached systems

We model the population of double white dwarfs in the Galaxy and find a better agreement with observations compared to earlier studies, due to two modifications. The first is the treatment of the first phase of unstable mass transfer and the second the modelling of the cooling of the white dwarfs. A satisfactory agreement with observations of the local sample of white dwarfs is achieved if we a...

New Constraints on Sn Ia Progenitor Models

We use the StarTrack population synthesis code to discuss potential progenitor models of SN Ia: single degenerate scenario, semi-detached double white dwarf binary and double degenerate scenario. Using the most recent calculations of accretion onto white dwarfs, we consider SN Ia explosions of various white dwarfs in binary systems. We calculate the evolutionary delay times from the zero age ma...
